Lion’s Mane + Cordyceps Tincture – Extraction as Ritual

Mushrooms are medicine, but their gifts are locked inside walls of chitin — the same tough polymer that gives lobster shells their strength. Without the right process, much of that medicine stays sealed away.

This tincture is my way of unlocking it. Every step — from the first soak in alcohol, to the hum of ultrasonic cavitation, to the final slow simmer of water — is intentional. It is science braided with ritual, passion, and respect for two of the most researched medicinal

mushrooms in the world: Lion’s Mane and Cordyceps.

Fruiting Bodies Only

Many mushroom products on the market use mycelium grown on grain. That filler dilutes potency and reduces the concentration of bioactive compounds. At Gypsy Soul, I use only the fruiting bodies — the part of the mushroom celebrated in both traditional medicine and modern research. No grain, no filler, just pure mushroom medicine.

Dual Extraction – Tradition Meets Precision

Mushrooms carry both water-soluble compounds and alcohol-soluble compounds, and you need both for a true full-spectrum tincture.

  • Alcohol Phase – High-proof neutral grain alcohol pulls triterpenes, sterols, and alcohol-soluble molecules like hericenones (Lion’s Mane) and cordycepin (Cordyceps). Alcohol also softens chitin, helping release compounds.

  • Water Phase – Purified water draws out polysaccharides and beta-glucans, the immune-supporting molecules mushrooms are famous for.

When both phases are combined, the result is a tincture that carries the mushroom’s full spectrum of compounds.

Ultrasonic Extraction – Sound as a Tool of Medicine

Most tinctures are made by soaking mushrooms in alcohol for a few weeks, with an occasional shake. This method works, but it has limits. Mushrooms are built of chitin, and soaking alone cannot fully unlock the medicine inside.

At Gypsy Soul, I go further.

  • Mushrooms are soaked for two weeks in high-proof neutral grain alcohol (for the alcohol phase) or purified water (for the water phase).

  • After soaking, each extract is run through several rounds of ultrasonic cavitation. Ultrasonic waves create microscopic bubbles that expand and collapse violently — a process called cavitation. When those bubbles implode, they generate intense shear forces that rupture the chitin walls of the mushroom cells. This physical disruption releases compounds that simple soaking cannot.

Once the alcohol extraction is strained, the mushroom marc (the leftover material) is used again:

  • Covered with cold purified water.

  • Run through more ultrasonic treatment.

  • Then moved into the hot water decoction phase — a long, slow simmer that extracts beta-glucans, polysaccharides, and other water-soluble compounds.

  • The water is carefully reduced to a precise volume, so when it is combined with the alcohol extract, the final tincture reaches a balanced and stable 38% ABV.

Why This Matters

  • Greater Potency – Dual-phase ultrasound ensures more of the mushroom’s active compounds make it into the tincture.

  • Better Bioavailability – Breaking chitin walls means the body can access and absorb the medicine more easily.

  • Preservation of Fragile Molecules – Ultrasonic extraction protects sensitive compounds from heat degradation.

  • Balance and Stability – Careful reduction of the water extract ensures every bottle is strong, effective, and shelf-stable.

Where others stop at soak-and-shake, Gypsy Soul takes the mushrooms through a layered ritual of soak, sound, and simmer.

Why 38% ABV?

The final tincture lands at 38% alcohol by volume — not by accident, but by design.

  • Preservation: High enough to stabilize and protect the tincture.

  • Solubility: Strong enough to keep alcohol-soluble compounds suspended.

  • Balance: Precisely reduced so water-soluble polysaccharides are carried without precipitation.

38% is the sweet spot — strong, effective, balanced, and shelf-stable.

The Mushrooms

🧠 Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus)

Lion’s Mane is at the heart of a wave of neurological research.

  • Hericenones & Erinacines: Unique compounds studied for their ability to stimulate Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), which supports the growth and repair of neurons.

  • Cognition: Human studies have observed improvements in memory, focus, and mild cognitive impairment after regular Lion’s Mane intake.

  • Gut-Brain Axis: Beta-glucans act as prebiotics, feeding gut microbes that may influence both mood and immune health.

  • Neuroplasticity: Early evidence suggests Lion’s Mane supports the brain’s ability to adapt and form new connections.

  • Emerging Research: Scientists are exploring Lion’s Mane in areas like neuroprotection, mood support, and recovery from injury — a field that continues to grow rapidly.

⚡ Cordyceps (Cordyceps militaris)

Cordyceps has been prized for centuries as a tonic for vitality.

  • Cordycepin: A nucleoside analog unique to Cordyceps, studied for its ability to improve cellular energy by boosting ATP production.

  • Energy & Endurance: Clinical studies suggest Cordyceps can enhance oxygen efficiency and VO₂ max, improving stamina and exercise performance.

  • Respiratory Support: Traditionally used to strengthen the lungs, now studied for its potential to support breathing efficiency and recovery.

  • Immune Modulation: Polysaccharides in Cordyceps are being studied for their ability to balance immune responses and support resilience.

  • Ongoing Research: Modern studies continue to explore Cordyceps in contexts ranging from metabolic health to anti-fatigue properties.

Science, Spirit, and Practice

This tincture is more than chemistry. It is part of my daily practice — something I live and breathe. Every batch reflects weeks of research, refinement, and ritual.

Lion’s Mane and Cordyceps sit at the crossroads of ancient tradition and modern science. Their compounds are being studied for neuroprotection, energy metabolism, immune balance, and more — yet their use stretches back centuries in traditional medicine.

When I craft this tincture, I stand in both worlds:

  • Guided by science, to ensure potency and precision.

  • Grounded in ritual, to ensure intention and care.

🌿 A Note on Taste

This is strong medicine, and it tastes that way — earthy, bitter, unmistakably mushroom. Many people find it easier to take by adding the tincture to a small amount of cold water first.

Disclaimer

This tincture is crafted with intention, research, and care. But it is not “medicine” in the way the FDA defines medicine. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. The information provided here is educational, rooted in both tradition and emerging scientific research.

As with all supplements, consult your healthcare provider before use, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or managing a health condition.

Lion’s Mane + Cordyceps Tincture is resilience in a bottle. Ancient mushrooms, unlocked with sound and fire, balanced with precision, and crafted for focus, energy, and vitality.
